MICRO-REVIEWS.

If you're looking for a deep-dive, multi-paragraph analysis for each volume, you won't find it here.
[Would I love to do that? Sure, but realistically, that's not sustainable.]

If, however, you're looking for a quick recommendation for relevance to a middle school collection, stay!

Full disclosure: I watched the anime adaptation first before reading this manga. The anime is visually stunning--I don't use that adjective lightly. The color work, lighting, and almost-watercolor effects are perhaps the BEST I have ever seen in an animated show.

The good news is that the art is so gorgeous by mangakas AidaIro (illustrator Aida and writer Iro) that the manga pages in black and white are also beautiful. This series definitely seems to be a favorite for so many of my student artists, and it's easy to see why.

The story centers Yashiro Nene, a first-year HS student who begins the series desperately wanting to be part of a romantic couple. She asks for a wish to be granted by a supernatural being that lives in the girls' bathroom: Hanako.

As you may imagine, things do not go as Nene planned and hoped.

Yen Press rates this series as TEEN. There is some fantasy violence.

IMO, this is a GREAT fantasy manga series for middle school. The artwork is amazing and the characters are well developed.
