MICRO-REVIEWS.

If you're looking for a deep-dive, multi-paragraph analysis for each volume, you won't find it here.
[Would I love to do that? Sure, but realistically, that's not sustainable.]

If, however, you're looking for a quick recommendation for relevance to a middle school collection, stay!

Assassin's Creed: Blade of Shao Jun by Minoji Kurata

So, here's the thing. I KNOW NOTHING ABOUT ASSASSIN'S CREED. (Beyond that it's a game and what I gleaned from the movie adaptation trailer). Which either makes me the best or worst person to review this manga. Let's find out.

The manga flips back and forth between 1526 in China and powerful assassin Shao Jun and her apparent ancestor in present day, Lisa Huang. There is a lot of compelling conflict here (in addition to the obvious time 'travel'). Conflict in the past with Shao Jun enacting revenge on the murder of her brotherhood and reclaiming a mysterious box. Conflict in the present with baddie Dr. Kagami who is lying to Lisa about why she's mentally transporting her to the past.

I liked (didn't love) this title. It was suspenseful, had appealing art and sets up the action and story competently. [Aesthetics wise, the size, cover art and coloring--those rich grays and burgundies--are lovely.]

This series is rated Older Teen, but I'm giving this first volume an 8th grade+ rating. There is violence (primarily torture), but it is not shown on the page, only the aftermath.

I'm always eager for more fiction titles that tie-in to popular games, so I'll collect all the Assassin's Creed manga (already have GN and fiction title tie-ins) that come out--until I read one that is not a good fit for MS (and then I'll post that here!).

Toilet-bound Hanako-Kun by Aidalro

Full disclosure: I watched the anime adaptation first before reading this manga. The anime is visually stunning--I don't use that adjective lightly. The color work, lighting, and almost-watercolor effects are perhaps the BEST I have ever seen in an animated show.

The good news is that the art is so gorgeous by mangakas AidaIro (illustrator Aida and writer Iro) that the manga pages in black and white are also beautiful. This series definitely seems to be a favorite for so many of my student artists, and it's easy to see why.

The story centers Yashiro Nene, a first-year HS student who begins the series desperately wanting to be part of a romantic couple. She asks for a wish to be granted by a supernatural being that lives in the girls' bathroom: Hanako.

As you may imagine, things do not go as Nene planned and hoped.

Yen Press rates this series as TEEN. There is some fantasy violence.

IMO, this is a GREAT fantasy manga series for middle school. The artwork is amazing and the characters are well developed.

Solo Leveling by Dubu (Original Story by Chugong)

Solo Leveling is a title your students may have been asking you for! It is wildly popular as a webtoon (or online comic) and is also an example of manhwa (Korean comics by Korean creators).

Solo Leveling is incredibly suspenseful and follows Jinwoo Sung, a low-level hunter who is putting his life in danger in his work to help his sick mother. He finds himself being an unlikely hero in a dangerous situation and then...things really start to get strange for him, in terms of new powers and adventures.

So, here's the thing. Solo Leveling is violent. It's bloody. It actually has an Older Teen publisher rating...and, yet, it's a title that I think is okay for 8th grade and up. [I'm basing this on the first volume only! I'll reassess after I finish the series.] The violence is done in a way that doesn't seem gratuitous (to me).

This manhwa is FULL COLOR and read left to right. Perfect for gamers and fans of Sword Art Online, RWBY, and Fairy Tail.

If your students aren't clamoring for this title yet in your middle school, you could hold off. {It's a DEFINITE PURCHASE for high school libraries, though.} In the interests of transparency, I do collect this title, so if you're willing to read it yourself and assess for your own collection/ population, you're in for an exciting read and possible addition to your collection.

Love in Focus by Yoko Nogiri [Entire Series Volumes 1-3]

The Love in Focus series by Yoko Nogiri is a delightful shojo romance tale centered on Mako Mochizuki~another plucky, positive heroine from Nogiri~and her first year of high school in a new town (on her own). She moved there at the behest of her oldest friend and because the school has an amazing photography club.

I highly recommend this series for middle school collections. Not only does it handle confessions, friendships, and romantic feelings with tenderness and respect, it has only three volumes. You can easily get the whole series for your library!

Those Not-So-Sweet Boys by Yoko Nogiri, Volumes 1-5

I love this series and it's PERFECT for middle school. [That's it. That's the review.]

If you want more in way of commentary. Here goes. This series focuses on Midori Nanami, a joyous, plucky first-year high school student who is tasked with getting three 'troublemakers' to come to school. Are they really troublemakers? Of course not. [There was a misunderstanding.] Does Nanami get them to come to school through her earnest efforts and mystery/problem-solving? Yes.

There are a lot of glorious tropes that are well-done here. Bad boy and good girl romance. Rich boy(s) and hard-working girl. Disapproving 'upper-class' family. The budding romance is sweet and I'm 100% invested in it.

The art style is very pretty and you may recognize it from Yoko Nogiri's other series [That Wolf-Boy is Mine and Love in Focus]. This is my favorite girl-boy manga romance I've read in a while. In fact, right now, I'm calling it my favorite straight romance realistic fiction middle school manga.

Volume 7 comes out in July, 2022.

given by Natsuki Kizu

If you've heard me talk about manga, you've probably heard me talk about given (all lower-case intended~it's usually stylized this way by the mangaka or as GIVEN). I talk about it so much because it's my favorite manga series. Natsuki Kizu's art work is just... PERFECT IMO.

So, given. It's rated older teen and I generally agree with that assessment, but I DO THINK Volume 1 is fine for middle school. Why collect just one volume of a series? Well, when the series is uber popular, I think it makes sense, especially given (see what I did there) that the series has Queer and (many think) disabled representation. GIVEN not only has a popular anime adaptation, it also already has a live action film! {The sixth volume came out in English in September, 2021.}

It's a beautiful manga, it connects to music for all of your music lovers, and Volume 1 sets the stage for a burgeoning Queer romance(s). The two main characters (in Volume 1) are Mafuyu Sato (guitar newbie, but mysteriously carries around expensive guitar) and Ritsuka Uenoyama (guitar prodigy). As Uenoyama teaches Mafuyu to play guitar, a rich friendship is born.

AND THE ARTWORK. Some of my favorite pages are the character designs throughout. Here, one of our stars: Uenoyama. Also to the right is a page from a later volume (with Mafuyu singing) that captures what is so LUMINOUS about Natsuki Kizu's artwork.

Many believe that given has well-done autistic representation (See more here: https://www.animefeminist.com/perspectives-playing-my-song-queer-autistic-representation-in-given/).

AGAIN. My middle school folks--buy Volume 1 for your collections.

Content warnings: suicide (which happened in the past) is a plot point

Kaiju No. 8 Volume 1

5/18/2022

Picture
Kaiju No. 8 by Naoya Matsumoto is an extremely 'buzzy' shonen manga. That exquisite cover draws students (and myself) in! As one of the fastest selling manga published in Shonen Jump (EVER), this is SURE to have an anime adaptation. Jump on getting this series now!

The story focuses on Kafka (and yes, this story is about metamorphosis) who works for a clean-up crew tasked with taking care of the aftermath of Kaiju (strange creature/monster) attacks and battles. He desperately wants to be a member of the Japan Defense Force that fights the monsters, instead of cleaning up their corpses. He works up the courage to try out with a new, young co-worker. But then...um...

I don't want to spoil anything for you as a reader, but this is a great title for middle school. There is violence--but so far, I'm rating it fine for middle school. Rated Teen by Shonen Jump, I can't wait to see where this story goes.

The Fox and Little Tanuki, Volume 1

5/18/2022

I've known about this 'all ages' manga for a while, of course, and judging by the sweet looking cover, I wrongly assumed it was a very light, fluffy story. I WAS WRONG. Is it sweet and adorable? Um, hello, look at that tanuki*! Of course it is! It's also suspenseful, rich in characters, and framed with a dynamic (redemption-like?) story arc. Senzou (a formerly villainous fox) has been stripped of his powers, but finally awakened after many years. His new job? Watching over an ADORABLE tanuki he eventually names Manpachi. Missions, dangers, and hijinks ensue as well as feelings. <3

I'm confident I could book-talk this to my middle schoolers--both those looking for an adventurous, action-packed story and those always here for adorable animal shenanigans.

A great purchase for middle school collections.

*If tanuki is a new animal for you, it's a Japanese mammal that is sometimes called a racoon dog. For your anime watchers, they all probably know what a tanuki is already, as it is very present in Japanese folklore. If they've watched the popular anime BNA on Netflix, the main character is a tanuki/girl hybrid!

Spy x Family Volumes 1-4

Adventure, spy series set in a 1960's-esque, post-war Berlin-like setting. Great mid-century aesthetic touches including clothes, cars, and furniture! This manga is everything! Funny, clever, sweet.

Volume 1.
Like everyone else seems to, I love this manga! Funny, sharp/appealing art style and filled w/ cool, elegant swagger. Anya (daughter) steals the show, but Twilight’s (father and spy) dichotomy as cool spy+developing warm family man=lovely. Rated older teen, but I disagree. Vol 1=fine for middle school IMO.

Spy x Family Volume 2
It just keeps getting better! The humor ramped up in volume two. Love the setting—a faux 50s/60s-esque West/East German-like world. The color palette for covers is beautiful (doesn't capture in a photo). Was happy to see the first anime episode adapted the manga skillfully! Still fine for MS.

Spy x Family Volume 3

We continue here in Volume 3 with more home and school shenanigans courtesy of my new favorite trio in manga: Loid, Yor, and Anya.

Is there sometimes violence? Yes, but not gory or gratuitous. I still don't understand the 16+ rating. Still fine for MS.

Spy x Family Volume 4
So excited to meet Bond (WORF!) + Vol 4 just continued the magic of this sublime series. Spy x Family just sparkles w/ humor+cleverness. There was intense dialogue ('ever stewed human flesh in a pot?'), but used to illustrate horrors of war, not titillate. Still fine for MS IMO.

Run on Your New Legs by Wataru Midori is fantastic! Perfect first volume—introduces world, characters + conflict, peeks into backstory, teases plot entanglements, and hooks us to root for hero, Kikuzato.

Kikuzato, a former stand-out soccer star whose accident caused an above-the-knee leg amputation is getting used to his new prosthetic, when a chance encounter with an 'inventor' steers him in the direction of running.
